Over a thousand companies in the construction, engineering, infrastructure and maintenance sectors are taking part: the Conscious Safety Day, which is taking place for the ninth time this year. Construction safety is super important, because there are still too many (near) accidents. Together for safe work' is the slogan for this edition. Check for yourself whether you already put the 6 tips below into practice!
Do you see danger? Say so!
Unsafe situations are never intended. No one takes a risk on purpose, or intentionally endangers their colleagues. It is often a matter of "just a quick fix," or ignorance. If you see something that is not safe, report it. Take responsibility and say what you see. Then work out together what is needed to make the situation safe. That way you help each other, just as the slogan "strong together for safe work" says.
Use tools properly
A tool or machine is designed and made in a certain way, and for a certain purpose. Always choose the right machine or tool to perform a particular job. Also check that they work properly and use them as intended.
That includes tools such as ladders, stairs, scaffolding and so on. Read the manual. Make sure a ladder or staircase doesn't wobble, don't leave out scaffolding parts. Take your time; it will definitely improve safety.
Clean up on a regular basis
A clean, tidy work area works more pleasantly and safely. A big advantage is that you don't run the risk of tripping over loose materials and tools. Another advantage: if you put things in a fixed place, you never have to search for them. If you clean up regularly, you will get used to it and it will eventually come naturally.
Use proper PPE
Pbm stands for personal protective equipment. Personalized, meaning specifically designed for you. That means the PPE is in your size, or otherwise set up or adapted to you. Therefore, do not lend PPE from / to a colleague. Be careful with your PPE, and make sure you always wear it when needed. Get used to this, for your own safety.
Slept out on the dock
An accident is in a small corner. And especially if you haven't slept enough. Then something goes wrong much faster. So make sure you are well rested when you start your workday. In the construction industry, the workday often starts early, and sometimes you have to get out the door even earlier because of travel time. This is only possible if you go to bed on time at night and get enough sleep.
(By the way: certain medications also affect your ability to react, so keep that in mind! Alcohol and drugs are a no go while working anywhere anyway).
BHV
Make sure you know which colleague on the construction site has a FAFS (in-house emergency response) certificate. If something goes wrong, you can call the right man/woman immediately.
